- Copy the code from any card below — it's a single line starting with PS1="...".
- Test it by pasting the line into your open terminal and pressing Enter. Your prompt changes instantly. This is temporary — it resets the next time you open a new terminal.
- Make it permanent by adding that same line to your shell's config file: ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile for Bash, ~/.zshrc for Zsh. Open the file in a text editor, paste the line at the end, save it.
- Reload your config without restarting the terminal by running source ~/.bashrc (swap in ~/.zshrc if that's what you edited).
Every prompt is plain ASCII (the exit-code checkmarks/circles are the one deliberate exception) — no Nerd Font glyphs, no special terminal font required. Where a prompt shows a username or hostname, it's always the real \u / \h shell escape, never a hardcoded name. Prompts that end in a plain $ show two copy buttons — copy user and copy root — the second swaps the trailing $ for #. Looking for something plain? Search monochrome for prompts with no colour at all.
